Copenhagen is compact enough that a two-hour photo walk can cover the old town, the harbour and a royal garden. Here are the places local photographers return to.

The old town (walking distance from City Hall)

  1. City Hall courtyard and balcony — warm brick, arches and the famous staircase.
  2. Strøget side streets — Gråbrødretorv and Magstræde for cobblestones and coloured facades.
  3. Nyhavn — the postcard. Go early or late to avoid crowds; the quieter north side has the best light in the morning.
  4. Kongens Have (The King’s Garden) — Rosenborg Castle, rose gardens and long tree-lined paths.
  5. Frederiksstaden & Amalienborg — grand, symmetrical and regal; the Marble Church dome makes a dramatic backdrop.

Water and canals

  1. Christianshavn — quieter canals, houseboats and the spiral spire of the Church of Our Saviour.
  2. The Opera House & harbourfront — modern lines and open sky, great at sunset.
  3. A canal boat — the most popular add-on for elopements; book a private boat for 30–60 minutes.

Green and romantic

  1. Frederiksberg Gardens — lakes, a Chinese pavilion and grazing herons, next to Frederiksberg City Hall.
  2. The Royal Library Garden — a hidden courtyard garden that has also hosted the city’s outdoor ceremony days.
  3. Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro — a peaceful, leafy park favoured by locals (be respectful).

Out of town

  1. Kronborg Castle, Helsingør — Hamlet’s castle on the water, 45 minutes north by train.

Frequently asked

Do we need a permit to take wedding photos in Copenhagen?

Casual wedding portraits in public streets and parks are generally fine. Commercial shoots, drones and some royal or museum grounds have their own rules — your photographer will know which.

What time of day is best for photos?

Early morning for empty streets, or the long golden evenings of May to August. Weekday mornings after a city hall ceremony are a good compromise.
